 2-year ban for bodybuilder

2-year ban for bodybuilder

22 Nov, 2011 12:00 AM
WAGGA mother Christine Zadel yesterday revealed the overwhelming regret she feels after being banned from bodybuilding competition for two years for using prohibited substances.

Deeply remorseful for what she describes as "negligence", the champion bodybuilder admitted to the shame which she has been carrying since the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority released a report on November 9.

"Wagga is such a small town and people will gossip, but I have to try and move on," she said.

"I hope people understand that it was a simple mistake.

"It's so disappointing and it upsets me that I have this blemish on my career now, but it's done and there's nothing I can do about it.”

After testing positive for performance enhancers clenbuterol and glycerol during the International Natural Bodybuilding Association state titles in Sydney last year, Mrs Zadel has set about putting her life back together over the past 12 months.

Mrs Zadel believes the “simple mistake” has tarnished her reputation.

“To be honest, there are people out there that do it all the time and I was the unlucky one to get caught,” she said.

“But it’s to the credit of INBA that they crack down so hard on it.

“I can understand there will be a bit of a kerfuffle about it for the next few months but I’ll just have to ride the wave.

“I know the truth and that’s all that matters.”

Denying any knowledge she was using banned substances, Zadel claimed she had purchased a fat-burning product over the internet which contained the ingredient clenbuterol, while taking glycerol for hydrating purposes as part of her training regime.

ASADA classes clenbuterol as an anabolic agent that helps the body to strip fat and build muscle and is banned in Australia, the United States and some parts of Europe, while glycerol is regarded as a masking agent.

ASADA says unsupervised use of clenbuterol can worsen pre-existing heart conditions or hypertension, while glycerol is prohibited as a plasma expander which requires the ingestion of quantities far beyond those which are found in foodstuffs and toiletries.

Zadel admitted she had failed to check the products were legal within the regulations of the INBA, a mistake which has plagued her since.

“I was so upset when it happened and I felt in fairness to the other competitors I wouldn’t compete with the INBA any more,” she said. “It’s definitely a warning for everyone to check your products.

“They do have a website, I just didn’t check it.”

Is this a poorly written article? First you make a statement from Ms Zadel ..“To be honest, there are people out there that do it all the time and I was the unlucky one to get caught,” she said.

But then the article changes its tone to it being an honest mistake because she was unaware of what the product she purchased contained. It's two conflicting tones. And it doesn't do Ms Zadel any credit if it was truly an honest mistake.

Oh, poor thing. If she was a man, this article would be crucifying her, not sympathising. I'm sure everybody who ever gets caught for this sort of thing uses the same excuse, whether an honest mistake or not.

@karaganda, you have conveninetly forgotten all the sympathetic articles about male football players who suddenly feel remorse for their antisocial behaviour once they are caught. She has accepted responsibility, she's getting a 2 year ban, what more do you want?

EVERY Inba competitor is fully aware of 'Banned' substances. Clenbuterol is sold as a 'single' substance (not within fatburner substances) It is BANNED with EVERY Natural federation! The IFBB federation allows many substances that Natural federations 'Blacklist' Declaring that she 'didn't know' she was using a Banned substance & a Masking Agent to cover that substance & had made a 'simple mistake' just "IS NOT" believable !! However I do believe she is SORRY...... for getting caught !!

As a professional body building athlete one would expect that you don't use any supplements without knowing what it is and what it does, otherwise why would you use them? Also as a professional athlete one should reserach the rules & regulations of the sport, so the honest mistake excuse really doesnt fly. Out of curiosity, I am wondering if any bodybuilding athletes can comment on what satisfaction you would get from using enhancers, knowing that you have only reached the standard you are at by cheating, not through your own hard work both at the gym & with your nutrition?

If she's genuinely remorseful, I'm a potato.

But you know what they say... the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

I just hope she learns her lesson and starts taking responsibility for her actions instead of all this poor-me-let's-take-a-wistful-looking-photo-for-the-paper crap.

People will respect you more if you just own up to it, Christine.
